Second pregnancy gaining less weight? Baby weighs less?

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010 | Gain Weight Pregnancy

This is my second pregnancy, with my first I gained 60 pounds. While I am trying not to gain as much weight this time, I am surprised at how little weight I have gained. I am 19 weeks and have gained a mere 5 pounds. I am not overweight nor am I underweight, my ultrasound revealed that the baby is around .57 pounds and I have read that an average weight is .8 for this week. I know it can very greatly but I am wondering how common it is for the second child to be of the same sex and weigh less than the first. My first weighed almost 9 pounds, and I thought it was common to have bigger and bigger babies?? Is this true?

Not to worry mom. I did sort of the same thing with my pregnancies. My first I gained 60 plus pounds and with my second, only gained 6 pounds only to have a 6 pound 4 ounce baby in the end. As long as your doctor is not concerned and you are eating healthy it’s not a worry.
Your doctor will keep track of the babys growth. Otherwise, you might find that your compensating for some extra pounds you already had before this pregnancy.
    Good luck!!!

Don’t worry.. it is totally ok to not gain weight in the first trimester, even when it’s your second baby. You body knows now how to regulate food intake. If you don’t over do it, you should only gain about 25 lbs total anyway.

My mom gained 50 with me and I weighed 9 pounds and my sister weighed less. I wouldn’t worry cuz you gained more than the average person does with their first. Good luck.

No. You’re weight gain doesn’t neccesarily mean you’ll have a smaller or larger baby. I gained 35 pounds with my first and she weighed 7lbs 4oz. With my second I gained 22 pounds, and he weighed 8lbs. 5 oz. With my third I gained 22 pounds, and he weighed 7lbs. 11 1/2 oz.

How much your baby weighs depends entirely on the babies metabolic rate, how well you eat, if you smoke cigarettes, how active you were during your pregnancy and if you have diabetes or gestational diabetes.

I have 3 children. The first, a boy weighed 7 lbs 15 oz at birth. My second a girl weighed 6lbs 4 oz. The third also a girl weighed 7lbs 8 oz. They were all 21 inches long. You will gain more weight as your pregnancy progresses. Don’t be so weight conscious that you keep your weight too low. Usually doctors like to see a 30 -40 lb weight gain for women. Remember each child is different, each pregnancy is different. Mine were all tiny that early, but they caught up soon. With my middle child, they thought sure from the numbers she was going to be about 10 lbs. lol..lol. they were wrong as you see. My third they thought would be about 5 lbs at birth. The numbers are a guideline but not in stone.
